Some fans initially criticized Matt Smith’s casting as Daemon Targaryen

When rumors of Matt Smith casting House of the Dragon emerged, the idea was quickly met with backlash. Winter is Coming reports that many fans felt that Matt Smith was a talented actor, but that he wasn’t cut out for the role of Daemon Targaryen. Before the series aired, fans also doubted that Smith could look “Targaryen enough” for the role, wrote The Things.

Clearly, Smith has completely proven the skeptics and critics wrong. Not only is his acting praised in House of the Dragon, but Daemon Targaryen has become something of an idol. “Before the show, I didn’t think Matt Smith was attractive. I’ve never seen him play before. He nailed this role and I find the Daemon character hot,” one Reddit user wrote.

‘House of the Dragon’ fans are falling for Daemon

Fans particularly swooned over a scene from House of the Dragon Episode 8, where Daemon reclaims King Viserys’ crown on his way to the Iron Throne. Director Clare Kilner, however, points out that it may not have been an entirely selfless act.

“Wasn’t that demon helping the king do what he wanted him to do anyway – make a decision in his daughter’s favor?” she thought while talking to The Hollywood Reporter. “If Viserys was about to speak out against Rhaenyra, Daemon would have let his brother fall flat on his face. In other words, aren’t all of Daemon’s moments, even seemingly kind ones, ultimately selfish? »

Daemon has certainly already committed several alarming acts in House of the Dragon. He killed his first wife Rhaenys, chopped off Vaemond Velaryon’s head without a second thought, and seduced a teenage girl Rhaenyra into a brothel. House of the Dragon writer and executive producer Sara Hess doesn’t see the appeal.

“He’s become an Internet Boyfriend in a way that baffles me,” Hess told THR. “It’s not that Matt isn’t incredibly charismatic and wonderful, and he’s amazing in the role. But Daemon himself is…I don’t want him to be my boyfriend!

Director Clare Kilner gets Daemon’s call

Still, it’s probably Smith’s charisma that does it for many fans. “They knew what they were doing to cast Matt Smith. They needed an incredibly talented actor who also had a particularly appealing type of charisma and charm,” wrote one Reddit user. “Daemon is basically a human being horrible who loves his family and has no real bad intentions.”

Kilner also points out that people love a bad boy, and Daemon is especially charming when his softer side comes through. “I’m not surprised. Matt takes so many risks in his performances and he’s got this little smile, and, you know…you can’t help it! He’s charismatic. People like bad guys,” Kilner said, adding that Daemon is not “particularly a good father or brother”.

House of the Dragon airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
