Active in the industry since the late 1990s, Courtney isn’t just the Flo of Progressive. She made her debut in 1998 in an episode of ‘Mr. Show with Bob and David.’ Her first film role was in ‘Melvin Goes to Dinner’, released in 2003. She also appeared in ‘Tom Goes to the Mayor’ between 2004 and 2006, ‘Mad Men’ in 2007 and ‘You’re the Worst’ in 2014.

In an interview with Lohud, Courtney recalled how she landed the role of Flo. “I went to an audition eight years ago for a ‘big box store clerk,'” she said. “And I put on my polo shirt and put my hair in a ponytail and I arrived.”

Courtney continues, “What they were looking for was basically a nice neighborhood waitress; she’s super nice and kind, almost to the point of madness, and I was like, ‘I can do that’. I went straight to my mother and attributed Flo’s personality to her. I said, ‘Yes, I can be Jane Courtney’!”

According to Courtney, people love Flo because she’s realistic and flawed. “In a lot of commercials, you’re being sold perfection, and that’s nice but ultimately it’s not realistic. Flo isn’t perfect, her hair and makeup, things have slipped through the cracks; it’s something to watch out for,” she says.

Courtney’s background in stand-up comedy and improv has helped her not only with Flo, but with other characters as well. When asked how long she would continue portraying the bubbly, upbeat character, Courtney quipped, “I don’t know, how much plastic surgery would that take? I could be propped up on a stretcher or something. Who knows? “
