‘Lilyhammer’ is leaving Netflix in November 2022

Lilyhammer, the first Netflix Original released by Netflix, will soon be leaving the service in several regions, including the United States. The historic removal follows a slew of other high-profile Netflix Originals that have departed recently, with many more expected in the months and years to come.

The series was Netflix’s first Netflix Original title, although since there are different types of Netflix Originals, this falls into the first category of exclusive international co-production/distribution. Of course, Netflix also experimented with originals through Red Envelope Entertainment, but that’s another story.

Starring Steven Van Zandt, the series saw ex-gangster Frank Tagliano enter witness protection and ask to be sent to Norway, after testifying against the mob.

Netflix first entered into the exclusive license agreement to bring it into the Netflix Original program in October 2011. It was later picked up for at least 9 other regions including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico , the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Colombia. The UK and Ireland notably received the show at a later date.

Upon first acquiring the show, Ted Sarandos said:

“‘Lilyhammer’ ‘is excellent, dark, fun television marked by great storytelling and outrageous culture shock and Netflix is incredibly proud to bring it to US, Canadian and Latin American members'”

Netflix US would air the show for the first time, starting February 6, 2012.

It was only after the first season aired in Norway on NRK1.

In February 2022, Netflix celebrated Lilyhammer’s 10th anniversary by reuniting Stevie Van Zandt and Ted Sarandos in an online call that saw them talk about the importance of the show.

Lilyhammer is leaving Netflix globally on November 21

Now, all three seasons of the show are set to release worldwide.

Removal notices have started popping up stating that the show will be removed on November 21, 2022. Your last day to watch is November 20, 2022.

Although a removal notice does not appear on the title page itself, you can spot it in the upper left corner when watching any episode of the series.

Why November 21, 2022? It is exactly eight years after the release of the third and this would be the the show’s final season, which ended on November 21, 2014.

Could Netflix renew Lilyhammer?

Netflix might renew the rights to the show to continue streaming in the future, but given a removal notice and the fact that sources indicate Netflix has opted not to renew Hemlock Grove (another high-profile Netflix Original removal ), the odds seem unlikely.

The rights to the show will revert to SevenOne International and Red Arrow Studios.

Lilyhammer will join the list of over 60 other Netflix Originals that have been released over the years so far. Netflix still has 3,252 originals at the time of publication, which represents more than 50% of Netflix’s overall library.

We’ll keep you posted as this story develops, but let us know in the comments below if you’ll miss Lilyhammer when she leaves Netflix.
