Additionally, Barry was a certified nursing assistant and lived in an apartment in Jackson, Mississippi.
Around 10 p.m. on March 8, 2010, Barry’s neighbor found him on the ground in the parking lot of the apartment complex. First responders rushed to the scene but were unable to revive him; Barry had been shot twice in the chest and was in a pool of blood. Who Killed Barry Odom?
Phone records showed Barry had spoken to Cheryl McGee shortly before her death. The two had been dating since 2009, and authorities immediately had a suspect; Cheryl pointed to her ex-boyfriend, Bryn Ellis. The investigation revealed that Cheryl and Bryn started dating in 2006, but she ended things in 2008 or 2009. While with Cheryl, he had a daughter with her but also lived with another woman , Katie Roberts. Bryn had been seeing Katie since 1996.
Cheryl told police that Bryn wasn’t happy with the end of their relationship and didn’t like the fact that she was seeing Barry. According to her, Bryn threatened to kill her and Barry if they continued dating. Court documents said that at one point Bryn followed Cheryl home after leaving Barry’s apartment and asked her to get into his van. He then took her to a hotel room, where they argued.
Cheryl said Bryn had been drinking and had a gun with him. Fearing for her safety, she faked an asthma attack and asked him to drive her home. But once they arrived, Cheryl claimed Bryn didn’t let her out of the vehicle until morning. Although she didn’t take his threats to kill them seriously, Cheryl and Barry still took precautions to avoid Bryn. One of them chose to meet in a hotel on March 8, 2010.
Before that, Cheryl let Bryn park her van at her house and dropped him off at his house. She and Barry met at the hotel between 7 and 8 p.m., after which they left. Cheryl was planning to meet Barry later that night, but when she called, there was no answer. At 10 p.m. that evening, first responders found Barry dead. After talking to Cheryl, authorities decided to arrest Bryn.
