What to expect from Shadow and Bone season 2 on Netflix

Here’s a quick recap of how Season 1 ended before we dive into Season 2 theories.

Our heroes step into the fold for one last time, and once again more deaths are to be expected. Kirigan uses Alina’s growing powers to create a new tunnel of light, allowing passage through the darkness inside the fold. A big fight breaks out and the world seems more divided than ever.

The deer’s power still eludes many characters, however, in a vision, Alina realizes that only she can harness its power, not Kirigan.

Ben Barnes explained how his character would change and adapt in Season 2 with his new power saying:

“He is someone who had an army and led this medieval hierarchy, someone who is revered and feared. But he’s even lonelier now – with a handful of vendettas and a bunch of people gathered trying to kill him.

He’s sort of all-powerful now. He just has to think of something dark, and it will happen. So it will be interesting to see which characters we find him interacting with in the future.

Jessie Mei Li Speaking to DigitalSpy also made some notable comments on what we can expect, saying:

“Alina goes from being a scared little puppy who can’t look anyone in the eye, to suddenly having this sense of gravity for her. You feel like she’s grown a lot, and she’s really strong. But she has still a long way to go, which is a very good place to leave her in. We know where she is going now and where she needs to go.

It remains to be seen how well the series will stick to the books. It’s been pretty close so far with a few notable deviations, but the central plot of Season 2 should follow Siege and Storm. Here is the synopsis of the second volume:

“The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very limits of the natural world.

With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the land she left behind, determined to fight the forces gathered against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina sinks deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic and moves away from Mal.

One way or another, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her – or risk losing it all in the approaching storm.

According to a season 2 synopsis seen by What’s on Netflix, the second season will see Alina and Mal on the run in search of another mythical target who will aid them in their fight against Kirigan while potentially teaming up with a new ally.

The Crows will also feature prominently in Season 2 (and are even rumored to have their own spin-off series) who are back in Ketterdam and face off against old rivals.

In Season 2, we’re promised a season “of political intrigue, bloody battles, flying ships, reunited friends, new lands, and a family secret that will shatter all expectations.”
